Willem Visser’s shipyard was our first client for boat transport. Business was good, and we received more and more orders for international transport. My older brother Henk joined as a driver in 1968, and in the years that followed, he increasingly took charge of the company. Everyone, whether your name is ‘Van de Wetering’ or not, simply starts at the bottom of the ladder with us. Around 1980, my father decided that I could start working in the workshop. That was very different from now. Some trucks required so much maintenance that they were in the workshop after every trip. We often worked at night and on weekends. A few years later, I was allowed to go out on the road as an escort, and even later, I had achieved my goal: I became an international driver.”

Changing of the guard

Alex: “Just like my grandfather, my father was an active entrepreneur. When he retired from the transport business, he bought an old brick factory. A number of spaces were rented out to unemployed tenants. As long as they didn’t make a profit, they didn’t have to pay rent. That way, he wanted to help people receiving unemployment benefits get back to work. My father passed away in 1987. My brother Henk had already taken over 50% by then. Together, we saw international opportunities for our yacht transport. I gained experience as a driver until 1998, but after that—sometimes against my will—I had to manage business from behind a desk more and more often.”

Gradual succession

Alex: “The age difference between my older brother Henk and me is 12 years. From 1998 onwards, I became increasingly involved in the management of the company, while my brother wanted to gradually wind down. During that time, I learned a lot from my brother, and in 2014, I eventually bought his remaining shares. That is how, via a long journey from mechanic to driver, planner, and salesperson, I became the owner of this wonderful company.”

Family business

Alex: “We owe a great deal to all the employees who have worked with us over the years. My grandfather started with one truck in 1921 and – via the first boat transport in 1965 and the first heavy transport around 1990 – our company grew into a fleet of about fifty trucks and seventy motivated employees. In addition to all those enthusiastic people, I am pleased that there is still interest in transport within the family. The next generation is once again bringing a new, fresh influence to business operations. My cousin Nico is Director of Operations, Alinda handles personnel matters, and Tim takes care of the permits.”

Easy success or perseverance?

Alex: “In our 100-year history, we have experienced long periods of prosperity and sometimes difficult years as well. The 2008 crisis hit our company at its heart. Revenue in our main activity, hunting transport, dropped dramatically. At that moment, the best qualities of a family business come to the fore, because we don’t give up easily. You have to fall back on what you are good at as a company. For us, that was: developing unique and self-conceived innovations in rolling stock. That way, we can transport higher, wider, and longer than our competitors. Internally, we sometimes use the name ‘world wonders’ for all those ‘weird’ vehicles.”

Alex concludes his story with a word of thanks to all employees. Alex: “I would like to take this opportunity to put all our employees in the spotlight. Everyone has contributed to Van de Wetering Loosdrecht BV in their own way. Our company is actually traditional and ultra-modern at the same time. Family atmosphere is still written in capital letters here. In that sense, we might even be a little old-fashioned. On the other hand, we develop the most up-to-date technical solutions ourselves. Just look at our DAF box trucks, which we converted in collaboration with Veldhuizen Wagenbouw. There is not a second transport company in the entire world to be found with a comparable vehicle concept. We have been around for 100 years now, but we continue with full enthusiasm!”

Van de Wetering Boat & Special Transport is a family business specializing in the transport of boats, yachts, and exceptional transport.

What once started as a straw transport business has grown over more than 100 years into a professional and specialized company currently employing approximately 45 tractor units, 65 mostly unique low loaders and trailers, and nearly 20 escort vehicles.
